Fresh Start Reads

Here are some of my favorite books to read when I need a good kick in the pants at the start of a new year. I was laughing with some of my favorite people the other day about how little personal development I did in 2020 and one of my friends reminded me of how much I had actually grown just by being human and soul searching and going to therapy and listening so if you’re in a season where heart work and whole hearted living is where you need to sit… I see you.

But after sitting in that season I missed reading and learning and being excited about something, anything! I love learning from the best about how and why they do what they do and how daily practice can make us sharper and more disciplined and more capable. I think we all could use a little more of that and a little less of pjs til 2 (just me?!).

So here goes, my tried and true favorites at the start of a new year:

  • Atomic Habits - I read this last year and it’s SO good. Explains and breaks down the power of habits vs setting goals and how habits actually help you achieve goals. Another favorite writer just released a habit book that looks worthy of a look.

  • Compound Effect - I have read this book multiple times. I was gifted this quick read at a conference and it’s been one I read each year.

  • How to Win Friends and Influence People - classic that needs to be reread often and I’m pretty sure the entire internet should pick up a copy after last year’s social media tension.

  • You are a Badass - honestly Jen’s fresh advice and down to earth writing (albeit it a bit colorful - hence the title) just makes you want to be her best friend because she convinces you that you are indeed a badass. I think we could all use a healthy dose of that kind of encouragement. Her book on money is also fantastic.

  • 15 Laws of Invaluable Growth - this is another timeless read for any business owner or person that wants to grow! I’ve read a lot of John Maxwell and this one is my favorite. I’ve heard a lot of people say the same thing.

  • Cultivate What Matters - I love both of Lara’s book but this one met me just where I needed to be. It’s a thoughtful look at how our daily choices add up and how to live life in a way that truly matters. I love all of her garden references about pruning out what needs to go and how slow growth is still growth. If you want a softer entry to the year, I highly recommend this one!
