THE FAIR!
Ah, the North Georgia State Fair. You can smell the funnel cake from a mile away. It's a people watcher's dream. We were having one of those franticgetoutofthehouse moments before we left. Phoebe was still sleeping and if we got there before 11 we got in free. Woke up poor Bee who handles interruptions like a sweet champ, we managed to get out the door, we even by a miracle found some cash. We ended up getting lost and missed the freeness by five minutes. I thought back to something I read recently that said to just say "oh well" when things like that happen because you want to store up your strength for when you really need it, not on little trifly things. As soon as we pulled in and Matilda was overcome with excitement I was totally saying "oh well." Priceless! That girl loves the fair.
Every year we go Matilda gets to ride more and more rides (crazy how much she has grown since
) which is amazing. Sam and I look at each other like, "No way, she can't be ready" and sure enough. She has zero fear which is really interesting and awesome. Interesting because I am afraid of just about everything. I went to get in the shade with Phoebe and was all, "ah, it feels so great outside, we are doing something as a family. yay!" then this dude who was a total close-talker came and was in Phoebe's face, he also had a baby, and then he proceeded to tell me that he just got out of prison, that he was there for 12 years, that he stole a car "nothin' violent," and only had his inmate ID to get in (which he showed me - don't worry). Sam was in line with Matilda and I listened politely, not sure I was breathing, and then my only reaction was, "Well, I guess you won't do that again." WHAT. I was trying to treat him normally and didn't want to excuse myself abruptly. Did some flash praying for sure and lots of smiling. That's my fair story.
One of the highlights of the year was all four of us took the bucket seats for a ride. A 14 minute ride (not that I was counting). It was exhilerating! I was so nervous my shoes were going to fall on someone's head, just look at my feet. Ha!! It was the most exciting part of our morning. Also, the perfect way to make it from the back of the fair to your car. So glad we were finally able to do something fun and fallish together.
